why couldn't I take "en passant " ?

After 8..b5, taking en passant is not a legal move. (It would have been legal if your pawn had been on c5 and not c6.)

If that was not the position, please use the Game Editor (the little Chessboard icon) and post the game using the game PGN.

en passant means if your opponent moves the pawn two squares, you can take it as if it moved only one square.  Only works when your pawn is on the fifth rank.
