Why do Americans like Bobby Fischer?

I'm certainly siding with flags on this one.  Nazi Germany also purged the Roma and the Bolshies, and neither of those groups were exactly renowned for living large, to put it mildly.

Didn't the nazis purge the mentally disabled and gays, too? Wealth is clearly not the root of nazis' anti-semite propaganda.

theoreticalboy

Yes, and black people.  And the Serbs, eventually, though that was more the Croatian client state.  I guess everyone except the Germans were just really wealthy back then?

Doesn't sound much like Oedipus to me.

Maybe it was a rejected early draft?

yeah i've read about it. glad that one didn't survive.

I'm sure it would appeal to our panda interloper, though.

I'm rooting for Carleson, and Anish Giri.

SerbianChessmaster, every single post of yours that I have seen has been a snide, passive-aggressive comment about either Americans or an American grand master. Not every American likes Bobby Fischer, but he won his title after a spectacular career as a chess prodigy in a time when the Cold War was at its highest. We don't have any other champions. He's sort of an embarrassment. But way to go, prodding away at America again.

In all honesty, I respect his talent, shrewdness and savvy. However, I loathed his arrogance and continual need to blame someone else for his problems.

I don't think he blamed others for his "problems", I don't think he perceived he had any problems. He stopped playing chess because he wanted to stop playing chess in official tournaments. no one forced him to stop. he just didn't like it anymore, so he stopped playing, he had a right to blame the u.s. government for trying all sorts of kind of f_cked up shenanigans to stop him from playing if he happened to feel like it, i think this pissed him off and sent him off the deep end is what really happened. all this talk about mental illness, whatever, he was just really f_cking pissed off because the shit he had to deal with and maybe said some things he shouldn't have. I guess everyone who is angry because of something and runs their mouth is "mentally ill" remember everyone smile smile happy happy AT ALL TIMES, or you might be "mentally ill". bullshit. this effing society and it's retarded conceptions of sane and insane is completely ridiculous. I also don't think he was all that arrogant either. and you probably would become a little paranoid too, if the government of the world's superpower was messing with you at every turn for a period of several years, fact.

We all liked Fischer until 9-11. After 9-11 there were a whole lot of people many Americans stopped liking very much.

People who are models of civility do not get murdered.

People murdered by the forerunners of the KGB are heroes.

I don't think Fischer was crazy.  He produced some outrageous rhetoric, but you hear similar rhetoric from progressives all the time and nobody calls them crazy.

 Well, except for me.

The only crazy rhetoric I hear is from conservitives.

Say what you will about Bobby, but everybody has their opinion on him, some people like him all around and some hate him deeply, I like him, but I dont try to convince others about how they should feel about him.
