Will technology ruin the game of chess?

I think the biggest impact technology has made outside of chess engines and chess computer is the fact that it's enabled the game to be played constantly over the internet. It's a good/bad thing in some regards. It's turned the game more impersonal, but it's also made playing more accessible. You have to take the sweet with the sour I suppose.

Exactly!  Accessibility is the key.  And that includes the freedom to tailor the experience to personal preferences.  The chance to play quickly, then do something else, then choose to go back to the game at any time within a certain window, plus the option of choosing the time frame -- all Perfect for us ADD types!  We all want tons of freedom.  (We can't be tied down, man.)

Nope, first you'll have to read some science fiction.

Which Vonnegut novel had Ice 9? That one was pretty good. I also liked The Sirens of Titan and Mother Night. Slaughter House Five was brilliant. The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov isn't exactly science fiction, but there are some strange goings on. John Milton is always a fun read.

Stately and majestic, maybe...fun, never.

Never try to explain technology to your mother in law. They run on hydrogen these days. But i will get you the latest model with 4 terra of anti matter.

"Anti-Mater?" Like in "mother?"  Is that some kind of joke?!  You're "anti-mothers?!"  Shame on you.  I'm an old woman, and I demand to be treated with respect.  (If you do apologize, though, I'll forgive you.  And I'll let you pick out one piece of hard candy from the bowl on the table in the hall. )

In duplicate bridge they do not say "a spade" and they don't say "one spade" they using bidding boxes instead. [this helps to prevent cheating]

PS my challenge for anybody of the almost 8 million players here to play me high stakes money bridge is still open.

Milton?  The day my professor assigned us Milton -- that put an end to my days of paradise at college.  Will I ever find those days again?  Nope, they're lost.  (Get it?  It's a "Milton" joke! -- lol)

I get it.

And if anyone is interested in the thread topic, I think we will always have in-person OTB games.

I agree about OTB, Mark.  And I did figure the "joke" was painfully transparent and cheesy, so I "punched it up"  with the "explanation."  (I just Love explaining humor!)

Also, I'll totally cop to making another of my infamous silly, tangential comments.  Thus the question: "Will technology ruin the possibility of lengthy discussions of "serious" topics?  Absolutely.  It's already happening." ... uh-oh, that was off topic.  I'm hopeless. (the shame.. the shame.. Embarassed...Cry

I disagree. The in brain computer is being worked at. It gives instant access to google, allows apps and has a large storage capacity. It will give all of us a second brain and enriched skills. OTB will be like formula 1. The one with the most expensive kit will win. Get used to it. Doping will be just normal.

Question is, will the in-brain computer also give Google instant access to you? Undecided

That would be a spooky question -- if we didn't already know the answer. (Surprised)

Yes it will ruin us and chess

ChezBoy

I hope not.

twidey

no it will not be ruined....people who use engines in these games are just ruining the game for themselves

ChezBoy

Yes, but chess takes two players usually, so if one person is cheating, the player facing him/her will also have the game ruined for them. If somebody wanted to play an engine, they would play a compputer knowingly.

twidey

the honest player's game w/be wrecked. however, chess will not be wrecked for him.

ChezBoy

Yes, but if a lot of people begin to use computer assistance, almost every game would be wrecked.

Tech carries both a big positive and negative and it always will be that way I think. After all, it is only an extension of us and what we hope to be, which again is a big positive and negative. Right?!?!

twidey

that's true so, we must play those with good attitudes and decent standards
