What gives is that, in order for en passant to be available, your pawn has to be on your 5th rank, not 6th. Your pawn was too far advanced for you to be able to take by en passant.

Yeah... The way to think About it is
The pawn moving two squares skipped one square "and avoided capture"
So essentially you can take it as if it didn't skip over the dangerous square.
In this case the pawn just moved out of danger
