Altering the security settings does not work at all on OS X mavericks. This must be fixed by chess.com by signing the application. BTW - Chess.com should not force the users to lower their security settings.
Given that this is a paid service, it is very unfortunate that such a central service does not work at all. The same can be said about regarding the stability for live chess. It´s down way too often.
This is kind of dissapointing.
I agree with the majority of members that people experiencing this problem should open a ticket and let the Staff at Chess.com research the problem.
Maybe I shouldn't say this, but you CAN go into your Internet settings and unclick the button that requires an up-to-date certificate. Maybe that is why I am not having the problems that the other people are - cause I turned that check "OFF".

I sent in a ticket 4 weeks ago and was told it was being worked on.
I find it amazing that so many Premium Members are complaining about the issue and effectively being ignored by Chess.com.
Folks it isn't going to be fixed. Erik stated in his "state of chess.com" video that java was not going to be in the next version of chess.com. He's also publicly stated recently that resources are all being directed towards the imminent release of V3 rather than fix the many bugs in the current version. Any month now...
And this is the "Help and Support" forum...
2 weeks since any comment from Staff.
Please give the Staff some extra leeway. I, like yourself, have been reading the forums and I have seen that 90% of ALL posts concerning problems are POSTED IN THE HELP & SUPPORT page!!!!
Do you or anyone else realize that because so many members (not yourself) are taking up around 80% of the resources here at Chess.com simply because 'they are too lazy' to READ the ANSWERS given in the Help & Support pages!
This site has over 8 Million members! If just 1% of the members are too lazy to read the Help & Support FAQ pages then they tie up the hard working Staff members because they have to explain to the idiot what is alreay in print! I could never be a Staff member here dedicated to answering questions... I just could not put up with the laziness and demanding people who expect everyone to tell them the answers which are already posted.
So when a ligitimate problem comes up like your own, it takes some investigation work. But WHO is free to do that!? The Staff is busy answering questions that are posted on the web site! Grrrr....
BTW, If 1 % of 8 million members who are posting questions which are answered in the FAQ pages every day, that amounts amounts to 80,000 messages per day that have to be answered!
I suggest shooting that 1 % that ask questions which are already answered in the Help & Support pages!
I would normally agree with Arrakis but I spent some time searching for those Help and Support pages he was talking about and didn't find anything answering this problem there. There is no menu item to take you there. A google search will lead to support.chess.com but there is nothing on that page about java or playing against the computer. There is a search box but typing "java" or "play against the computer" fails to bring anything useful up. Google also gives an option of "Help and Support" which goes to the Help and Support Forums. That's where we are here. So what was the point? We're where it seems that chess.com wants us to be.
baddogno's post did provide some good additional info. As a former software developer, I disagree that future versions should take precedence over current serious problems but I understand how that can be a business strategy. Like any business strategy it's only as good as it is profitable. Hopefully it is working for chess.com because I really like this site.
Up to yesterday I was able, in chess mentor, to play the position against the computer, clicking allow the blocked application and accepting the risk. I go to sleep last night at 22:08, nobody entered my house or did anything, and this morning BOOM, I cannot use anymore the engine to play chess positions against, because during the night, also if nobody used my computer, magically happened that the application has been blocked by security settings (that I didn't change before to go to sleep).
Here the details, and the pic, did it happened to anyone else?

go to your java installation
Configure your java security level to the lowest possible (medium).
I'm using the latest version of java and play using google chrome.
Very bad advice by soependi !
This is the same as telling everyone to 'turn off your anti-virus program in order to let us get through to your machine!'
The latest update for Java raised the bar level because they discovered that if you lower it, the program opens the possibility of 3rd party programmers to write dangerous programs to your hard drive with the Jave script!
To update Java for Windows users click on "Start" at the lower bottom corner of the screen. Then select "All Programs" and a list will come up. Click on 'Java' and a menu will appear. Then click on the 'Update Java' to make sure that you have the latest version. After it updates, reboot!
Then I suggest using the Firefox browser because I could not get IE 8 to work on Chess.com . One thing that a fellow member told me, "Thanks Don, everything worked after I followed your instructions and turned 'Compatibility Mode to OFF'. It is not needed here and only creates problems.
Best regards,
Don
Neither Chrome nor Firefox will let you run this java applet at all unless you select the medium security setting. They both ask whether you want to run this specific java applet when in medium security mode (it seems to be part of Java security).
That's why I think they should fix this one. If the java applet were signed, then this wouldn't require the medium security setting like it does now. I am able to play against the computer only because I have selected the medium security setting. Arrakis calls this "very bad advice" but the only alternative is to completely disable the ability to play against the computer.
It has been claimed on this thread that chess.com has decided not to fix this problem and instead to focus on a future version to be released at some unspecified time. I think that decision should be revisited. The ability to "play against the computer" is a very nice feature of chess.com.
Also, I don't think it's that hard to sign an applet.
I have no aggression towards you, but you misquoted me. What I said was that the person said to "lower Java to the lowest security setting". Go back and read it. When I contacted Java they told me that the 'Update' had set the security bar back to medium level because if you lower it to the bottom then you are open to attacks from 3rd party programmers.
The upgraded version does this automatically.
Best regards,
Don
Sorry if I misquoted you but I did go back and read what you quoted, it was "Configure your java security level to the lowest possible (medium)." (emphasis added).
Medium is also the lowest level available to me with my version of Java and that is why I misinterpreted what you intended.
So I guess we agree that setting it to medium is an acceptable solution becuase you have to make an affirmative response for every unsigned applet which runs, including the chess.com applet.
I still would prefer to have my Java security set higher, however, and others don't like having to respond to a security question every time they play against the computer while still others can't figure out how to change their java security settings. Those are the reasons I think chess.com should sign their applet.
Non of the above "hacks" helps me to play against the computer on OS X Mavericks:
Please respond chess.com!!!

SOLVED
I had the same problem today (started play on chess.com yesterday night), but solved it today.
Find the "Configure java" program. (The program is easy to find in windows 7 - press the windows/start button, - and write "java" in the search field). "Configure java" should be one of the options that appear.
Run (click) "configure java"
select "security"
select "edit site list"
select "add"
and type "http://cssjs.chesscomfiles.com
It worked at my computer :-)
I am using firefox and windows7 64bit
I can mention that i first alowed "http://www.chess.com/play/computer", - and that i have the latest java version (Version 7 Update 51)
I can also mention that there was a slow startup. Ca 30 seconds before it starts loading, - and ca 40 seconds more to start. (Over 1 minute). I have a very speedy line (60mb/60mb). The ping to chess.com was 165 at this time.
Hear are the error - message. I tried to copy it in the message box - but it didnt work...
I hope this helped.
Same here :(
