I am involved in a game which I cannot conclude because I have my opponent's king in perpetual check and have offered a draw which my opponent has declined. If I release his king, I will almost certainly lose the game.

Apart from resigning, is there a way to bring the game to an end ?.

The "offer draw" button should change to a "claim draw" button once a 3-time repetition of the position has occurred.  Click on that when you see it to force the issue.

Many thanks to omni for the response but, regrettably, there has been no change to the "Offer Draw" button, in spite of the fact that the position has now repeated many times.

I'm not sure, then.... I haven't had an opportunity to test the functionality of the 3-time repetition here, but I've read about it a lot on these forums.... Eventually Eric should see this topic, and maybe he can help you figure out why it isn't working.

Have you attempted to talk to your opponent about the position you both are in? I just looked at your game and saw that the same positions were taken now 5 times in a row. Maybe committing to another game upon acceptance of the draw will trigger getting it done.

Another option is to send your game link to the support team and they should correct that programming ommission. Hopefully it can be adjusted quickly.

I have done my best to explain that there is no way for either of us to win but he thinks it is "no fair" that I should keep placing his king in check and he will not accept the draw.Cry

Here is the rules book term for Draw -

Draws

Occasionally chess games do not end with a winner, but with a draw. There are 5 reasons why a chess game may end in a draw:

  1. The position reaches a stalemate where it is one player’s turn to move, but his king is NOT in check and yet he does not have another legal move
  2. The players may simply agree to a draw and stop playing
  3. There are not enough pieces on the board to force a checkmate (example: a king and a bishop vs. a king)
  4. A player declares a draw if the same exact position is repeated three times (though not necessarily three times in a row)
  5. Fifty consecutive moves have been played where neither player has moved a pawn or captured a piece.

Forward this to your opponent and if this does not work then keep putting him in check until he gets tired of it

If the position really is repeated 3 times and you don't have the option to claim a draw, this is a programming bug. You should submit this to the site administrators so that they can fix it and players can avoid this situation in the future.

not just that he must know etiquettes and rules in chess as they said, but, worst is he might just annoying his opponent until you gave in and change your move coz he knows once you change your move he will win, coz i encounter once of that kind before in a street game.

will someone be kind enough to tell me where the "Offer Draw Button" is please.

Two of my games have reached the 50 moves and the pieces can no longer be moved by me.  I am elderly and no doubt lacking in knowledge to enable me to finish these two games against the same opponent.  I don't mind just losing them, but how is that achieved?

Sam I feel your pain. I was in a game the other day in which I was even on material and behind oh position but could force a repetition draw. My opponent did not accept and then chided me stating that I should have let him win because I was unsporting. I won on time but was told that if I got a reputation for doing so people would not play me on this site. I told the guy he had the chance to take a draw while he still had time and offered a rematch but he refused. this made me a sad panda as all I want to do is play chess , win when possible or draw if i can't win. I guess thats not sportsman like but I don't know. Anywho I wish I had a solution but alas I can only share your frustration.

if your in a commanding position the next thing to look for after how you can win is how to do it without getting in perpetual check from your opponent. It can be frustrating, but it is a rule of chess so its hardly unsportsmanlike, your opponent should have been looking for that or accept the draw gracefully if he couldn't block it. That just means that you made did a good combination to save the game.

Sam, the text of the Offer Draw button does not change, but if you click it when you are at the repeated postition, or if the 50 move rule applies, the game ends immediately as a draw, weather your opponent wants it to or not.

to DELLOV, in online chess, the Offer Draw button is just a little bit below the Submit Move button

50 moves without moving a pawn or taking any piece should work. that's another way to draw a game.
