People have different ratings for different time controls: chess.com displays one's highest rating by default, whatever that might be. When your game actually starts, the rating applicable to that time control is displayed.

My opponent was 1631 after over a 1000 games. When we started, he had just lost his last game against a 1500 player. When paired against me in my current game, he is starting only rated 1359. What gives? I will be risking more rating points than I should. Thanks!
