You can download a little chess.com java application for your phone that is much better, just go to http://chess.com/mobile on your phones wap browser to download the java app - timmy
T-Mobile G1

Yes that's what I've been trying to do.
Oh hang on - I see the download url in the source of that page. That's what I needed.
Hmm. Don't get past "enter username". Tap done or press scroll wheel and nothing happens. Enter seems to be intepreted as a space or tab.
This is using the J2ME Midlet runner from Android marketplace.

OK now I can't even use the proper web interface on the G1. The pieces jump straight back after I move them. (No, I'm not in check!)
I tell you what would be a cool solution for me and many others, and much easier than faffing about with midlets. If you show the board in the alert email and process a reply to that email with a move in the text. So I see the board, hit reply, type Nf3 and send. You get the email, process the move, and send me another email for my next ready game.

This was also an issue on the iPhone. Sometimes, you have to try several times to get it to work properly, and sometimes it worked flawlessly. It was really a crapshoot so I got fed up and would wait until I got home or on my laptop.

Yes. It is still a challenge to find the link to the midlet because the phone gets the PC version of the page. But once found it is great. All the flicker I had on the Windows mobile 5 device has gone too.
Also the "Java J2ME" software needs to be downloaded from android marketplace, which users might need telling about.

OK we have another midlet update and I am again having problems installing it.
First up, chess.com/mobile does not render in the browser - the browser displays the wml source. Somehow the browser is falling between the two stools of wap browser and full web browser.
I type the lengthy url www.chess.com/mobile/bin/www.chess.com/Chess.com.jad into my browser and it seems to give me the old version again (possibly a caching issue). I get the "There is a newer version..." and "Server sent invalid data..." message. If I type into the Netmite midlet explorer, it just says page not found. And I doubt most users would even find that URL. (Well most users of other phones wouldn't anyway.)

Very odd. I just tried again twice - pointed my mobile to chess.com/mobile and used the lenghty url as well. Both gave me the new version 2.0 ?

I'm using the Netmite Java/J2ME midlet runtime thing, if that helps. I'll happily try another runtime if there is one.

Ok this is still unchanged. I download the jad, run it, and it tells me there is a newer version, and the server is sending invalid data.
Also the browser version seems to have stopped working with the G1 browser, in the last week or two. I can select a piece, but when I tap on a destination square it fails, and in the process appears to try to select a large number of squares - a brief perimeter is drawn around most of the squares of the board, I think containing all the pieces.
When I go to online chess in my T-Mobile G1, I just see the wml source, not a rendered page.
Is there an actual download link I can point my phone to? The 'send a text' feature gives an error. ("Authentication failure" in IE, and "Failed to send a message to your phone" in Chrome.)
I can just about use the website proper with the G1, since it has a javascript-capable browser, but I have to zoom in a long way to tap accurately on the destination square for a move. Text entry would be easier.
