Troublesome ad script

Almost once in 3 times I close a chess come tab, firefox freezes for about 5 seconds and then shows me this error. I tell it to stop the script. This has been going on for 2 days. How do I get rid of this?

My OS is Windows 7 and I use the latest version of firefox.

Skwerly

The problem is that you use Windows.Laughing

Really, though, that might be a java run-time error.  I don't know, because since I moved over to Linux I don't get error messages.  :D

OK, thanks for the tip, Skwerly, but I don't see myself switching to linux in the near future (like, about the next 20 years or so? Tongue out) , so I'd appreciate any suggestion to get rid of this in windows Smile.

In Firefox Tools > Options > Contents, make sure JavaScript and Java are activated. Then try to update your Java modules.

Thanks hicetnunc, JavaScript and Java ara already activated, but I'm updating my java right now, probably this was causing the problem.

philidorposition

For the record, updating java hasn't solved the problem. Frown

And exactly the same thing happened in another computer with ubuntu. So I guess the problem isn't caused by me. Help anyone? Staff? It's really annoying to wait for 5-10 seconds after almost each click on the site.

is this still happening? it's unfortunate that we have ads, but it's necessary :( chess.com isn't free. but ads do slow down the site because they use scripts from other sites, which might at times have slowed down or have problems. i'm sorry - nothing we can do about that unless it because a huge widespread problem or is lasting more than a few hours.

philidorposition

Yes, it's been like that for more than 5 days now. If it's normal and there's nothing chess com can do about it, then it's OK, I understand the necessity of ads for sure, but it's not the usual "waiting for page to load" time. It blocks mozilla for a few seconds, then displays that error message, I've pasted the screenshot above.

And I must also mention that I think it's not about entering a page, it's about quitting a page (either by just closing the tab, or clicking any other link on the page).

I've been having exactly the same problems for weeks, first on XP and now on Vista.

+1

Also, even when there's no script error, i feel that the pages are loading much slower tha usual. I know that loading ads is part of the non-member deal, but it may be slower than you'd want it to be, so i thought it would be good to point that out.

erik

thanks for letting us know! i've already emailed the ad network about it!

philidorposition

Any news from the network, Erik? This has been going on non-stop. I just want to know if I need to get used to it or not.Smile

erik

they said it was fixed :( can you post a screenshot again? is it the same thing? i need to know who to blame! worst case, you should just add no-script or some ad blocker. very weird.

erik

and that is certainly the same script as before? have you tried noscript?

PrawnEatsPrawn

"and that is certainly the same script as before?"

No idea, it's the same message from my machine though.

"have you tried noscript?"

Nope, please explain.

A screenshot from around 3 mins ago:

I should note that it got rarer when you requested another screenshot. This thing is pretty sneakySmile.

And I think I'm 99% sure this happens when you quit a chess.com page, by either clicking on something else (not necessarily another chess.com page) or close the tab.

I'll try that no script app, thanks erik.

Thanks, added to Firefox.... doesn't seem to be supported by I.E.8 though, or have I misread something?
