Request for a maximum Glicko RD to enter live tournaments

Dear community,

it occurs frequently that players entering a strength limited tournament applicable for their current rating and finish hundreds of points higher after the tourney is finished.

This is a request to allow only members with a maximum Glicko RD of a value to be specified (maybe 50) to enter rating limited tournaments.

Members should play "normal" live matches so that their real playing strength can be assessed before allowing them to enter these tournaments.

Of course, this would not apply for "open" tournaments.

What do you think?

Good idea! Yesterday I was one of the players you mention; I´d just registered, took part in a blitz tournament <1200 and finished second with a rating of around 1400. Embarassing, I was expecting disqualification. I think your suggestion should be implemented.

i have to agree...i was in a tournament that was for 1800-2000 and with round one almost finished the top rated is almost 2300 -_-...mind you this was in a correspondance tourny but still...either corres. or live...around 50-100 games should give a realistic estimate of the players strength...

In Live Chess tournaments we currently have the RD limit at 250 and we move everyone with RD higher than that to OPEN section. It was a lower number before, but we had not enough players in non-OPENs, and we had to move it up to 250. Now, we can consider lowering it to 100 perhaps. We'll see. We just don't want to move everyone to OPEN and have not enough players to compete in non-OPENs :).

I see your point, when average players still having a high glicko it's not really fun to play in open tournaments.

But how many games does it take - say within a week - to get your glicko down to a reasonable value? 10, maybe 15 games? Not toomany I would think.

And then you should be OK to play in strength limited tourneys.

Maybe an RD limit of 100 as proposed by piotr is a good compromise.
