Should there be an option for a longer game than 30 mins?

You can play longer than 30 minutes, use the custom option.

Nope, custom works fine.  I just put one up for 120 minutes for hahas and it showed up on the far right.  It's just unusual as you have to remember that you have to double the time of the game to get it's actual max time (not counting increments) since both sides get the full allotment of time, and it seems you at the minimum will be using all of yours ;)

So if you put up a game of say 60 minutes, you are really asking for a game of 2 hours max.  Not a lot of players have that much time unfortunately.

Just asking for the general opinion because I would just LOVE a 45min option or even an 1h one.

I'm one of those sucky slow players who want to take their time when thinking. My problem is that with this approach I'm usually ahead coming to the end of midgame / endgame but my time is just running out. I had a really good match just now, which I lost due to time. I didn't time out, but at the end the guy had 13 mins to my 5 mins so I had to start making moves in haste. This lead to me overlooking an attack and lost some material and resigned. I would have lost the game on time without the mistake anyway though.

Obviously it is the players fault for taking too long but for a bad chess mind and beginner like me 45min game would be much more suitable. I mean in the official tournament play there's like 3h time isn't there? Surely there are players like me who want to play one longer game every now and then instead of only blitz?

In the New Game tab, if you use the drop down just under it then choose Custom you can enter any time you want from 1 minute to 120 minutes.

If you're using bonus time (increments) its from 1 second to 60 seconds.

I know the custom option is there but let's be honest, it's pretty badly designed system. Hardly anyone uses it. I made a 45 min game, waited for good 10-15 mins and decided to just go 30 min and get an opponent instantly.

Unless you have a friend to play against the system is pretty useless tbh.

I disagree.  There is nothing wrong with the site giving reasonable options.

If there happens to be another person who wants to play longer games like you do, it's the only way you're going to find them via the live interface.  If you don't want to wait as long as it takes for someone to come along, then don't use it.  But that doesn't make it useless for everyone.

it's not that it's a badly designed system...it's just that not many people want to play long internet games.there's no 45 45 "culture" here like they have in ICC.

Good move.  Go find another site just because there is a feature on this site that you don't want to use (and which for some reason you therefore assume nobody else uses).

Ah great, I have exactly the same problem of 30 minutes beeing a bit too short for me right now and I did not know about custom options, thanks.

I think this topic is better suited for the Site Feedback & Suggestions forum.

I absolutely agree with the first poster that there should be a 45/45 option along with several other long time control options. CerebralAssassin pointed out that Chess.com does not have a "45/45 culture" like the ICC. Could it be because Chess.com is not trying to cultivate one? Just about every chess book/instructor mentions that a player needs to play lots of slow time control games to improve but chess.com seems intent on promoting blitz/bullet/lightning chess.

I can speak from experience, whenever I start a game using the custom option (usually 45 to 60 minutes) it takes a long time to get a game. Once I get an opponent about half the time I get heckled for taking so long to move. I usually reply (politely) that the time control was posted before the person accepted the game. I know I could turn off the chat but I enjoy talking to my opponent if they are so inclined to do so.

I just feel that if Chess.com included the longer time controls as a standard option (not a custom one), it might entice more people to give longer time controls a chance.

Back when I used to play more "live" chess on here I cultivated a crew of guys that played 45-90 minute games.  I could get you in contact with them if you'd like.  They are all pretty cool guys.

To johnmusacha: Sir, would you, please get me in contact with the guys, playing 45-90 minute games. Thanks a lot. Atan

amtch

To Bosseking: Sir, how and when could I play 45-90 minute games with you. Regards, Atan.

johnmusacha

Yo, I sent a message.  I don't wanna post these guys names out in the open.

I know this is old but I found  a pretty good compromise. I used to play nothing but 45 or 60 minute games, it does take a while to find some one. If you compromise and play say a 25 5 game it usually adds up to the same thing and more people play it.

Haha.. 45mins game, surely I will fall asleep. But I can finish it later when I  will wake up!
