I always tried against my kid. Even the top GMs lose close to half the time, learning from your losses and making improvements s one of the great life lessons kids get from chess. I found letting him have some take backs or saying "are you sure?" before a questionable move helps them realize consequences of not thinking things through. Not an issue now as I have not beaten him in 6mos.
