Why the 60 second chat rule?

After coming back to this site after a long absence, i began to wonder why i even left in the first place, that is, until i started to chat in the main hall and the 60 second chat rule happened, which says that non membership members can only post once in a minute.

This was a shock to me, since the site has so much to offer for its payed members that it baffled me why the staff decided to add this annoyance to the members, and its exactly that, its simply an annoyance, not a feuter for the payed members just a cheap way to make the package seem more lucrative :/

and i doubt people would pay just to be able to chat, since you can do that in practically any other site, and its not like chess.com has few stuff to offer, the payed membership is full of exciting offers that again, it baffles me why the one minute rule was implemented in the first place.

and not to mention the fact that this is probably why the rooms are so inactive anyway , just compare to the rooms of other chess websites and you'll understand how not having active chat rooms really affects the community feel and affects the overall experience.

I would like to hear your opinions on this, but please don't give me the "its for the payed members only" argument since chatting really isn't special to chess.com and i doubt people would pay just for it.

I think the real point is that people can't create loads of new accounts to spam, advertise etc.

I would imagine it is to limit people from making free troll accounts that spam the chat room. Since when you ban them they just make a new free account and go back to spamming. With a paid account there are consequences.

Most types of time restrictions like that are specifically there to combat trolling/spamming. It could probably be more like 20 seconds though.

May be a pain to monitor it if it was unrestricted.  This is a pretty popular site.  Other sites have a lot of people, but chess.com's 10,000 at once is quite a lot.

I am sure there's an alternative to this rule, since other websites have unrestricted chats and hardly any spammers, and they are quite popular too.

Which further strenghten my argument, even though the forum isn't restricted , we hardly see any forum spam (such as your post)

so again, why restrict the chat? :D

I don't know if you are really an Icealandic person or not but I find it very weird to talk english to a nother Icelander.

There are som spammers in the chat bullshitting about stuff. That's why.

Not as many people on the forum I think.  But there is spam at least a few times a week.  Moderators usually catch it really fast though.

To get people to pay. Same as new members not being allowed to chat in main hall (I mean, hardly anyone is stupid enough to believe that it is really to prevent abuse)

I believe it, and I'm not stupid. Nobody pays to be a premium member to use the chat...

Don't you we, the premium members are also discriminated? I mean the discrimination is on us, the premium members, not non paying members. Can't you see?

Soz, bean_Fischer, i thought it was only for no members. But its still a ridiculous rule

Indeed, the most common reason why non-paying members cannot post more than once each 60 seconds on any site.

HOWEVER, there are alternatives. Like saying you must have played 10 games in the last 28 days.

But this is the easiest (and most profitable) way.
