Today is the 110th anniversary of the start of the Cambridge Springs 1904 tournament.  The tournament was won by young Frank Marshall, who soon thereafter became US Champion.

Thanks, Steve E, for publishing this !

Imagine the European Masters went by Steamship "Pretoria" to the US. Watch the dresses, clothes and hats of the young ones on the photographs : Pillsbury 32, Schlechter 30, Marshall 27, Lasker and Janofski 36 years of age.

Marshall won and was undefeated, Lasker and Janofski equal in second place (total 16 participants)

The main surprise was the form of Pillsbury (8th/9th, 7/15) who was suffering from the illness that was to kill him less than two years later.

The year 1914, quite another world, also in chess : up to that time there were only 24 Grandmasters, of which one third passed away, Anderssen, Charusek, Kolisch, Mackenzie, Pillsbury, Steinitz, Chigorin and Zukertort

The 16 remaining were invited, but due to age and other reasons five men cancelled the invitation : Winawer, Burn, Weiss, Maroczy and a German player.

Like Pillsbury's play was disappointing in 1904, in 1914 Rubinsteins play was not on top level and he did not reach to the top-five.

Appreciated your posting the new link and enjoyed seeing the autograph images for the tournament participants.  Someday one of the certificates will surface.
