How To Get a FIDE Rating

Sort:
NordstromAve

I played 14 games in FIDE tournaments however I dont have a rating. What is required to get it?

MrDamonSmith

Do both, study & play tournaments. Are the fide tournament games on-line or real over the board tournament games?

NordstromAve

they are real fide tournaments and i think i will get a very low rating because i lost 11 won 3 (all blitz)

YohannaShavit

Blitz games don't count, only classic long games , for instance 2 hours a game

NordstromAve

but fide differs the ratings of blitz, standart and rapid ?

YohannaShavit

Ok, maybe for blitz rating you need to play more games than with classic chess but I think you will be able to find the information at fide website, classic chess you need only 9 games I think

Okay,thank you for your attention

No problem happy to help

A tournament director explained it to me last year, and I understood him to say you need nine games in FIDE-rated tournaments, and in those games you need a non-zero score, meaning at least one game that is not a loss. Also your opponents apparently need to already be FIDE-rated for the games to count toward the nine you need. For example I played a five-round FIDE-rated tournament last year, but only four of the games were against FIDE-rated players, so in the FIDE records I'm credited with four games, not five.

jefe70 ,thank you for your response,  I heard that you should at least perform better than 1000 in a tournament to get a rating. Did the tournament director mentioned anything about it ?

Here are the requirements to get a FIDE rating:

Step 1) You must play at least 3 FIDE rated games with at least 1 point scored IN ONE SINGLE TOURNAMENT!  This must occur first.  Note, just because a tournament is FIDE rated doesn't mean every game is FIDE rated.  If a FIDE rated player plays someone with no FIDE rating, that doesn't go as a FIDE rated game for the rated player.  If the FIDE unrated player plays another FIDE unrated player, that game doesn't count as a FIDE rated game.  So therefore, you must have at least 3 games in 1 tournament against FIDE rated opponents AND you must score at least 1 point.  Whether that be 1 out of 3 or 1 out of 9 doesn't matter.

Step 2) Starting with the games from Step 1, you must then have 9 FIDE rated games within the next 2 years.  If you don't fulfill this, you must start over.  Now keep in mind it's a rolling calendar, so let's say you have the following scenario:

9/2012 - You play in a 5-Round FIDE rated event, 3 of your opponents are FIDE rated, and you score 1 point amongst those 3 opponents (irrelevant what you did against the other 2)

4/2013 - You play in a 5-Round FIDE rated event, 2 of your opponents are FIDE rated, and score 0 in those 2 games

8/2013 - You play in a 5-Round FIDE rated event, 3 of your opponents are FIDE rated, and you score 2 in those 3 games

11/2014 - You play in a 5-Round FIDE rated event, 4 of your opponents are FIDE rated, and you score 1 in those 4 games

1/2015 - You play in a 5-Round FIDE rated event, 2 of your opponents are FIDE rated, and you score 0 in those 2 games.

So take the above scenario.  You have 3 games with at least a point in September 2012.  The 2 games in April 2013 make 5.  The 3 games from August 2013 make 8.  However, you didn't get your 9th game by September 2014.  No good.  However, you also had an event in August 2013 that also met the 3-rounds with 1 point requirement, so now instead of having 8 games, you have 3, and the games from 9/2012 and 4/2013 are extinguished.  In November 2014, you reach 7 games, and in January 2015, you reach 9 games.

Your first FIDE rating would then be based on your 9 games from August 2013, November 2014, and January 2015, in the above example.

Therefore, look back at the tournaments you think you had 14 games.  See first off how far apart they were.  Look up each opponent on the FIDE website to see if they have a rating.  If they don't, doesn't count!  Lastly, make sure that the earliest event you think you played in featured at least 3 RATED opponents and that you scored AT LEAST 1 point counting ONLY the games against FIDE Rated opponents.

Do you still have at least 9 games in a 2 year span based on those restrictions?  I'm guessing not!

I found this the other day and was super excited as I entered my first tournament yesterday! It was a 9 round blitz event, so my main goal was to ... "get a FIDE rating!"

It started out well, despite blundering brilliantly ... I only played rated players and scored 3 out of 9 (2 wins, 6 losses) but guess what, I had a BYE in the second round so no FIDE rating for me just yet. Have to wait for the next tournament in a few months in order for me to be legit. I also heard that even after I meet the criteria it could take a few months to be updated with FIDE ... so hopefully by end of the year I'll have a rating! Woohoo!!!

question to make sure i understand. given these tournaments:

10/2018: go 0 out of 2 in a FIDE tournament against FIDE rated players
01/2019: go 2.5 out of 4 against FIDE rated players in a FIDE tournament
04/2019: play 5 games against FIDE rated players in a FIDE tournament

do my two losses from 10/2018 factor into my eventual rating, or since they happened before my '1 out of 3' event, do they not count?
