What's the deal with all these "story" tournaments

I see loads of tournaments with a story, typically pages and pages long with pictures, videos, etc that have nothing to do with chess at all.

Am I missing something here, is it some sub-culture because I can't really see the point?!

Examples (with links)?

Ziryab

It's a subculture. I don't see them because I don't go slumming in those neighbourhoods. I played in a tournament that was in honor of Ziryab, the person who introduced chess to Europe. That was six years ago. A group that I was in creates tournaments in memory of famous historical battles like Salamis. They call themselves historical association.

Ziryab

That looks like a good tournament for motorcycle enthusiasts. Cool story and photos.
