Hi t0sh,

A few questions and comments on the format:

  1. Will players be allowed to play for more than one team in this tournament?
  2. Why put a 50 player minimum on the group size?  This will eliminate some of the strongest vote chess teams automatically from the tournament.  For example, the top 2 rated teams both have fewer than 50 members.
  3. What will you do if there are ties in the Round 1 phase?
  4. What will you do if there are ties in the knockout phase? (1W,1L,1D or 3D)
  5. Why 3 games per opponent in Rounds 2-4, but only 1 game in the Final?
  6. Seems to me that it might be preferable to play 2 games in the knock rounds so the colours are even.
  7. I can provide you with the elo ratings of all the teams that sign up.
  8. I like rule #7.

Good luck with the tourney and happy new year!

Hello Daws,

1. Yes, players can play for more than one team. However, a member can represent one team, meaning that admins can register one team.

2. I was trying to avaoid the new teams or inactive but minimum five games played should do that. So this is no longer a requirement.

3 & 4. I took my time to get everything but I still missed this part. I will be posting the tie break system shortly. The qualifying round might turn into a two round or few more additional games might be added.

5 & 6. The reason for 3 games is to avoid 1-1, that does not eliminate 1.5-1.5. I think it is more effective than 2 games.  The final is one game because I thought the two finalist need one game to battle and it is 3 days per move so the teams will have long time for analysis and son.(May be Rule 7 will be applied later)

7 & 8. Thank you :)

Honestly, I think 1 game, with the associated color imbalance would not be sufficient.  Also, I wouldn't want a blunder to decide the champion.  Why not do a 7 or 8 game match in the finals?

Well, I understand your point. Consider this, it is a final game with 3 day to make one move. The teams has many members to discuss a move during the three days. There should not be blunders, if the teams is organized and focused on the game.

I'd also suggest that 3 days per move is too long.  I've found 2 days per move is preferable for most teams.

Usually not, but it could happen.  Also the color imbalance still exists.  We want to make sure that the finals make the right team champion.  Why not do a 7 game match?

Let's get to the Qualifying round first then we will worry about the tournament games. Because the qualifying round will depend on number of teams. Right now it is set to minimum of four games per team in the Qualifying Round. Qualfying round might have increase in the number of games or turn into two rounds.

To eliminate the color imbalance we can change to four games instead of three. What I have right now is the basic idea. It will change through out, since it is first season.

t0sh

Yes, it will be 2 days per move.

It's a LONG tournament, so, need more active Admins (preferablely Premium members, and my choice is rigamagician and Daws74,if they agree) and t0sh's choice is more suitable.

As there is only 18 teams registered (applied teams) I suggest skipping the qualifier round and make it something like this.

Round 1: 18 teams divided in groups of 3. Top 2 teams/group advance

Round 2: 12 teams divided in groups of 3. Top 2 teams/group advance

Round 3: 8 teams divided in groups of 2. 1 team/group advance

Round 4: 4 teams divided in groups of 2. 1 team/group advance

Final round: 2 teams play for winning the tournament and I suggest the loosers in round 4 play for the third place too.

In case of tie breaks both teams advance, and each extra team that advance will be set in one of the groups making one group for example 4 instead of 3 when still only 2 advances.

Always 2 games/opponent with each color at all rounds playing simultaneously. In case of tie in the final round the players playing for the first place will play another round with 2 games. The players playing for third place will both end at third place in case of a tie.

This is just my suggestion and I don't decide anything here Wink

That is a great suggestion. I was thinking of something similar :)

I was planning that in the Final, in case of a tie, both teams are awarded the champion title. The third place game is also a great idea.

Thank you for your suggestion.

Always glad to help Smile. Just wondering one thing. You say the pairings will be based on the elo ratings provided by the Vote Chess ELO Rankings group, but which system will you use? I hope it isn't highest rated teams VS highest rated teams.

No, it will be:

1 vs 6

2 vs 7

3 vs 8

4 vs 9

5 vs 10

I was also considering,

1 vs 10

2 vs 9

3 vs 8

4 vs 7

5 vs 6

I like the first option since it will be more balanced rating wise and the high rated play a more challenging game while lower rated don't play high rated with huge rating difference. In this case, it should not matter much since it is a team competition.

Martin0

I agree the first option looks best. Good luck with the tournament!

1st one....agree
