Open Mic Knights

As you may be aware, Queen LOB announced in a Forum post that a couple pawns have been promoted to Knight-admins here at Poets and Writers of Chess.com (PWoC). We're IJReilly and Writch and we've got some ideas that we hope will help liven-up the house...

Open Mic Knights

In the spirit of the similarly named coffee house & pub events, these events will highlight new writers and old writers with new stuff. In the context of PWoC, we envision these events will be much like LOB's contest, only without all the contesting. That is, there will be no voting so we'll have nothing but winners and hopefully no losers .

What also will be different is that everyone will post their entries on the forum as individual threads, but the News Post (and probably a mirror-post on the Forum) will serve as a "Launch Pad" with all the contributions listed and linked and hopefully introduced much like the way Rael was featuring active contributors (I'd put a link to that, but it went the way of Rael himself).

We hope this will be a regularly occurring event, but likely it will be irregularly scheduled.

To start off, we want to spotlight Writers of Prose.  We are soliciting writers contributions to be posted on our forum.  We would like to encourage all writers to contribute shorter pieces or excerpts from their longer works.  We are suggesting the following format:

1. Please put your name and "Open Mic Knight"or "Prose Knight" in the title of the post on the forum and then send a message to either Writch or IJReilly that you want it in the list.
2. Brief introduction of yourself and your selection.
3. Your selection/prose should be between five hundred and one thousand words.
4. If its an excerpt and more of the greater selection is available for members who would like to read more, please advise them how they may get it (by request or link).
5. Any suitable subject for this forum - that is, we won't screen or censor, but please. if it may contain subject matter or language that is likely to offend the faint-of-heart, please put a very noticeable CAUTION in your introductions?

So, please anyone and everyone...

then leave a message, send an email, or post a note to Writch or IJReilly.

Again, the only guideline we're putting out there for this one is: The excerpts should be a minimum of five hundred (500) and a maximum of one thousand words (1000).

• Update #1 (Jan.13th am): This will last for a few weeks before we start with another theme (to be decided later).
• Update #2 (Jan.13th am): For those who would like Prose defined, from Wiki we can use this:
      Prose is writing that resembles everyday speech. The word "prose" is derived from the Latin prosa, which literally translates to "straightforward". Prose is an unpretentious form of writing...[which] lacks the formal structure of meter or rhyme. Although some works of prose may happen to contain traces of metrical structure or versification, a conscious blend of the two forms of literature is known as a prose poem.

Open Mic Knights: Prose Knights

Here now, are our participants... Let's put our hands together and give them a warm welcome!

• Writch's Prose Knight (an example) - A playful piece called Scalding - a kid's stream of conciousness thoughts one early winter morning on the way to school.
• Kevindubrow's Prose Knight - A short story about whether somebody can ever be Never Wrong - never might be closer than you think!
• csharpe's Prose Knight - Feeding the Animals is the title of csharpe's serving of prose; its more food for thought than for their stomach.
• CapCloud's Prose Knight - A period piece of sorts, introducing a lineboy with vicarious Love.
• CapCloud's Prosey Encore - Cap, our resident anthropomorphist, seduces you with a little minxy OX-5 airplane. He didn't title it, so I'll call it DASH the Rules or Contact! (you all decide)
• Writch's (Intended) Prose Knight - Writch gives his impressions of a traditional Japanese ceremony on the beach.
• qu33nsgambit's Prose Knights (parts 1 & 2) - In a sneak-peek at her attempt, queensgambit introduces us to a mystery guest that shows up at a mental health facility. Don't worry! She supplied a link to more if just a sample is not enough.
