Short Defeats Efimenko

Submitted by SonofPearl on Sun, 09/27/2009 at 2:13am.

England's evergreen #1 ranked player, 44 year-old Nigel Short (pictured) has won his match against Ukrainian talent Zahar Efimenko in Mukachevo.

Efimenko upset Short in fine style to win with the black pieces in the first game, but Short struck back in game two, using a defence he had never played before!  "Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks?" said Short! *

After tense draws in the following two games, Short took the lead with a win in game five and drew game six to take the match 3.2-2.5.

The match was organised by Universal Event Promotions.

I enjoyed the games. Thanks for sharing. I really liked game 2 - it was all pressure, pressure, pressure before he started picking up free pieces.

Yay! I'm loving this Nigel Short revival that's going on. Great to see him competing so well!
