Hello, everyone! My name is Dejan Bojkov, one of Chess.com University’s new instructors!
My first seminar will be:
Chess 221 – The Pin – How to Create and Exploit the Tactical Method
Level: Chess 311 is aimed at players with a strength of 1200 – 1500.
When: Wednesday May 30th, 2012 at 12:00 PM Pacific Time.
Format: The total seminar duration will be 2 hours and 15 minutes, with two 1- hour sessions that are separated by a 15-minute break.

The pin is one of the most common tactical methods when we use the power of one of our line pieces (a queen, rook or a bishop) to partly or permenantly "freeze"an opponent's piece, thus making it predictable and possible a prey.

When the pin is against the king we have an "absolute" pin, a very dangerous situation for the "frozen"piece which makes it extremely exposed and vulnerable.
Course Description: The first part (one hour) of the seminar will show how the pin is created and how it can be effectively used.

Advantage in development is one of the most common pre conditions for a successful pin and the added pressure against the pinned piece will almost inevitably win it. This pressure can be ideally given by the smallest chess unit (a pawn) but other pieces can also work.

Removal of the defenders as a way to exploit the tactical method will also be part of this  hour of tutoring. In this case the supporting pieces of the pinned piece are taken away and the piece is lost.

 After the break (15 minutes)

There will follow part 2 which will teach about the false pins and the methods to defend against pins- specifically how to successfully break a pin and the tricky pin-breaking sacrifices. Double Pin will also be discussed.

As a result the participants should be able to increase their understanding of the featured tactical method and become more successful in the tactical part of the chess game.

Do not forget that chess is based on tactics and that even in th most strategical position one is always aware of the tactical nuances.
