Garry_Kasparov_And_Daria.jpgSix long years after his premature retirement from active chess competition, Garry Kasparov is finally returning to the game!

The former world champion, and still the highest rated chess player of all time has struggled to launch a political career in Russia, and now his youngest child (with third wife Dasha, pictured) is nearly four years old he has decided to return to chess.

Kasparov made his announcement on a visit to the Aix-les-Bains tournament where he was promoting the "Chess In Schools" initiative with the president of the European Chess Union, Silvio Danailov.

Explaining his decision, Kasparov said, "When I stopped playing chess I said, “Maybe I will be flying less.” I was dead wrong. I’m flying three times more now. And you know in chess it was, I flew somewhere and I stayed there for two weeks. It was a long tournament. Now it’s boom-boom-boom. In some ways, I wish for the quiet years to return. I have no life. This is fantastic news for chess, but it raises more questions than answers in the short term. The upcoming candidates matches in Kazan were already somewhat devalued by the absence of Magnus Carlsen, but the absence of a newly-active Garry Kasparov? Surely unthinkable!

As soon as Kasparov reactivates his dormant rating, here's how the revised rating list will look:

1  Anand, Viswanathan  IND 2817
2  Carlsen, Magnus  NOR 2815
3  Kasparov, Garry  RUS 2812
4  Aronian, Levon  ARM 2808
5  Kramnik, Vladimir  RUS 2785
6  Ivanchuk, Vassily  UKR 2779
7  Karjakin, Sergey  RUS 2776
8  Topalov, Veselin  BUL 2775
9  Nakamura, Hikaru  USA 2774
10  Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar  AZE 2772
11  Grischuk, Alexander  RUS 2747
12  Gashimov, Vugar  AZE 2746
13  Radjabov, Teimour  AZE 2744
14  Ponomariov, Ruslan  UKR 2743
15  Wang, Yue  CHN 2734
16  Kamsky, Gata  USA 2733
17  Gelfand, Boris  ISR 2733
18  Svidler, Peter  RUS 2730
19  Nepomniachtchi, Ian  RUS 2729
20  Vachier-Lagrave, Maxime  FRA 2728

UPDATE: HAPPY APRIL FOOLS' DAY EVERYONE!

Kasparov did visit the Aix-les-Bains tournament to promote the "Chess-in-Schools" initiative, and the photos are from the official website for the tournament. Also, the quote used above is real, but it comes from a four-year old interview with Kasparov.

Sadly, the great Garry Kasparov has not announced his return to the game. We can only dream...

Chessbase.com had a couple of April fool's day jokes too, although this actually wasn't one of them: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=7119

It's a good thing I read this after the "Update" was added. I would have gotten the  USA Today on the phone demanding this story be tomorrow's front page article.

I was a bit suspicious, as when I logged on chess.com I first checked the forums, and if Kasparov really returned I would assume at least 9 of the 10 "Most recent posts" would be on different threads discussing this! But I guess my joy was overriding my sense of reality.
