World Open 2010, Philadelphia

The World Open 2010 is currently taking place in Valley Forge, Philadelphia. The event runs from 29 June - 5 July and includes several 9-round Swiss tournaments for different rating levels.

Each rating level is also (rather confusingly) split into either a 7-day schedule or a 4&5 day schedule.

The show-piece Open tournament (also split) has attracted players such as Vallejo Pons, Alexander Onischuk, Surya Ganguly, Pental Harikrishna, Loek Van Wely and Luke McShane and Chess.com's Matt Helfst, for the 7-day schedule.

The 4&5 day schedule features the likes of Gata Kamsky (pictured), Alexander Shabalov and Ray Robson as well as some more familiar names to Chess.com including Magesh Panchanathan, Sam Shankland and Alisa Melekhina (apologies if I missed anyone!).

The official website with the latest standings, including replayable and downloadable games can be found here.

A nice win by Pons in the Nimzo-Larsen attack.

Great coverage with both bishops in the first game.

White will play rxe4 with the threat of rxe6, so black must play e5, then rg5+ followed by rg7. Overwhelming attack

In Kamsky - Bellaiche I'm confused about why Bellaiche resigned. 29 ... f6 seems perfectly playable. Granted, white has an advantage but it is by no means overwhelming.

I thought Alisa the beautiful had some pressure on Robson and at least an easy draw at the end.  But the mating threats and endgame play by Robson was unmatched at the last few segments of the game.

You left out 30-something GM's not to mention a whole bunch of titled players. :-) In sum of all sections, usually about 1200 players.  Very interesting tournament and congratulations to Magesh on his draw against Kamsky!  A few games on the top boards can also be seen on the monroi site.
