Zero Tolerance?

Submitted by SonofPearl on Wed, 03/10/2010 at 10:39am.

zahar_efimenko.jpgAfter four rounds at the European Indivdual Chess Championships, just two players lead the men's event with perfect scores.

GM's Baadur Jobava of Georgia and and Zahar Efimenko of Ukraine (pictured) have a half point lead over a 15-strong chasing pack on 3.5/4.

On a side note, an interesting petition has been made to the organisers, signed by over 100 of the participants at the event, asking for an amendment to the 'zero tolerance' rule for late arrivals.

Recent FIDE changes to the official laws of chess now mean that unless otherwise stated, all FIDE events operate a policy commonly known as 'zero-tolerance' for late arrivals at a game.  If a player is not seated an ready at exactly the time a round is due to start, he/she loses the game by default.

Rule 6.6a states: Any player who arrives at the chessboard after the start of the session shall lose the game. Thus the default time is 0 minutes. The rules of a competition may specify otherwise. (From the official rules).

The petitioners are requesting that the default time be changed from 0 minutes to 30 minutes, to allow players some leeway.  I blame mischievous cats...

it seems unanimous, yet the geniuses in charge at FIDE can't figure it out. why does FIDE have so many staff members anyways?

I am an on time to early type of person. I agree with Webhead if the person isn't there on time just start the clock.

@ Demetrios18.

Surely you're joking?!!! Not a single active GM on this planet is weak.  In fact, no one who has achieved any level of mastery is weak.  That's a horrible statement and it's simply false!

After the first 15 minutes, the missing player losses a pawn, randomly chosen.

Every 15 minutes thereafter, any randomly chosen piece is removed (except the King).

If Kf2 then Re2+ and Nf4+.  No matter what he loses his queen.

I am of the same opinion. Starting the clock is the best rule.

Zero tolerance is horrible. There are a lot of ways someone can get late to the game that arent the players fault (example:like searching for the place for the 1st round of a tournament in a city you´ve never been before, sometimes is hard to find the place).

And it doesnt make much sense, the objective should be to make people play, not to make people winning/losing because of a rule. Things are to be decided on a board, not outside it.

The knight will take the queen anyway, it's a double threat.

For USCF games, we just start the clock because its their punctuality is their responsibility.  You sometimes get lucky because the opposing person doesn't have a clock and can't start without you.

I agree, zero tolerance is kind of silly. If a player arrives late, it's their own fault. They know they should be at the board to play. So, start the clock and see if they arrive.
