2021 HAWAII OPEN Chess Championship & Blitz Championship  

When:  December 18-19, 2021

Format:  A five-round Swiss-System, non-elimination chess tournament - everyone plays all rounds.  It is USCF rated. There are two sections: Open and Reserve (for players rated below 1600 or unrated.)  The six-round Blitz tournament is open to all abilities, and you play each opponent twice.  Players in the Open and Reserve sections are required to record their moves.  Chess scoresheets, clocks and sets are provided by the tournament organizers.

Time Control:  Game in 75 minutes with a 15-second delay (75/15). Blitz tournament: Game in 5 with a 3-second delay (5/3).  

Registration:  Players must pre-register by 6:00pm on Friday, December 13.  If you do not pre-register you cannot play.  Register by email, sending name, USCF rating (if any), section (Open, Reserve, Blitz) and USCF ID number, and send payment via Paypal or Google Pay to RobKeo@hotmail.com.  Facebook Payment to Robert Keough.  Blitz tournament on-site registration opens at 5:00pm and closes at 5:30pm on Sunday, December 19.  Make sure your USCF membership is current before you register.  Check your membership status here. 

Entry fee:  $50.  Pay via Paypal, Google Pay or Facebook.  $10 discounts for juniors under age 20 and seniors over 60.  $10 discount for all players who pre-register before midnight on Sunday, December 12th.  $5 discount for additional family members.  

Blitz tournament entry fee:  $25, with $5 discounts for juniors under age 20 and seniors over 60.  $5 discount for players who pre-register before midnight on Sunday, December 12th.  

Saturday Round Times:  10:00am.  2:00pm  7:00pm.  HCF Annual Meeting at 6:00pm

Sunday Round Times:  9:00am 1:00pm  Awards at 4:00pm.  Blitz from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Byes:  Half-point byes available in any round (2 byes maximum).  Last-round byes must be arranged before the start of the second round.

Prizes:  Official state chess champion trophy shared by Open section winners who are Hawaii residents with current Hawaii ID or license. Class titles awarded for A, B, C, D, E Hawaii residents.  Cash prizes based on entries with 100% returned.  EXAMPLE: If $1200 is collected in entry fees, and there are multiple competitors at each class level, the prize distribution would be $200 first, $100 second, $140, $70 under 2000, $120 $60 under 1800 in the Open section. In the Reserve section the prizes would be $150 first, $75 second, $100, $50 for under 1400,  $80, $40 for under 1200, and $60, $30 for under 1000.  Unrated players can only win the top two prizes in the Open section and half of the top two prizes in the Reserve section.  Prize money for the Blitz tournament will be distributed in a similar way, with class prizes roughly half the amounts shown above.

Official Ratings:  USCF official ratings from November, 2021  will be used for this event.  All participants must be current USCF members to play. To see the current list of Hawaii players with USCF ratings click here.  

COVID Safety:  Because the pandemic is not over yet, there will be COVID safety precautions:  

  1. Masks are required at all times in the building.
  2. Temperature will be taken at the door.
  3. Hand sanitizer will be required before entering rooms.
  4. Chess pieces, boards and clocks will be sprayed with alcohol between rounds.
  5. Multiple rooms will be used to reduce the density of players in each room.
  6. Pairs of players will be seated more than 6 feet apart in tournament rooms.
  7. Players are encouraged to sit back or lean back when it is not their turn.
  8. If both opponents agree, they can play their game outside or in the atrium.
  9. Proof of vaccination, immunity or recent COVID test is greatly appreciated!
  10.   Any player showing signs of COVID (persistent coughing, high temperature, etc.) will be asked to leave immediately.  Partial refunds will be given based on unplayed rounds.

Please do not come to the tournament if you have any symptoms or signs of COVID-19!
