En Peasants Open III
Congratulations to everyone who took part in our third En Peasants Tournament. The club had grown significantly since round 2, but numbers were relatively low. Nevertheless, the trend of not being able to defend a tournament win continues, with new face DanBranch7 taking gold!
Here are the Champ's games...
Round 1:
A very tense start to the tournament, playing last week's champion. The two were level coming out of the opening, but the brilliancy Knight D7 on move 17 gave DanBranch7 a lead that he maintained throughout the remainder of the game, up a piece in the endgame.
Round 2:
Slightly less even matchup in the second round, with a quick victory against long-term club member Lucyelfamalam. After winning a piece out of the opening, DanBranch7 delivered checkmate on the 29th move.
Round 3:
DanBranch7's final game was another tricky matchup. Doyoulikecurry, the champion of the first ever En Peasant's match, sacrificed two pawns for counterplay. However, a smart queen trade sent the players into an endgame with DanBranch7 up two pawns. Unfortunately, slight inaccuracies led to a drawn pawn-king endgame, and the players agreed to a draw on the 47th move.
He finished the tournament with 2.5/3, and is our third ever gold medallist! He will have the chance to be the first player to defend a championship next week...
