Fog of War Chess Championship Tomorrow, December 11
Dear Variant Fans,
The final event of this year's Chess.com Community Championships is here: the Chess.com Fog of War Chess Championship starts tomorrow, December 11, and features a $2,500 prize fund.
Fog of War is a chess variant in which a fog covers the chessboard, and players can see only the squares their pieces can move to. This variant went viral in 2020 after it first appeared on Chess.com, with creators like GM Hikaru Nakamura, IM Levy Rozman, and IM Eric Rosen publishing multiple videos featuring it. Since then, it has remained a fan favorite.
The two-day event will have eight qualifiers on Day 1 and the knockout Final on Day 2.
Qualifiers on December 11
- There are eight arena qualifiers.
- Each qualifier is a 75-minute arena.
- The time control is 3+2.
- The winner of each arena qualifies for the Final.
- Players already qualified for the final cannot play in subsequent qualifiers.

Knockout Final on December 12
- Eight-player double-elimination knockout.
- The time control is 3+2.
- Each match consists of four games.
- If the match ends in a tie, players contest 1+2 games until there's a winner.

Last year, Luis Chan claimed the title after edging out FM Yihe Fu in a hard-fought match. After the win, Chan shared that he had been playing the variant since it first launched on Chess.com. "I've loved it ever since then," he said. "I think it's a really good mind game. You try to trick your opponent, and there's some cool tactics."
