"Hand & Brain" Tournament

this Saturday

Dear Silverdale Chess Club Members, Families and Friends,

It’s been over a year since we held the last, casual, really fun, Hand & Brain Chess event at the Silverdale Library. So give yourselves a hand. You made it to the first anniversary “Hand & Brain” tournament.

“Okay, but what exactly is “Hand & Brain”?

We’re glad you asked!

Hand and Brain, is a “fun” chess variant, where two players team up against one opponent.  One member of the two-player team is the “Brain” who, before each move, names the chess piece on the board to be moved (either the King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight or Pawn). The other teammate, (the "Hand") must move any legal piece of that type.
It is a wonderful; way to share vision and promote collaboration, with 10–15 minute time controls.
Say that again?!
A two player team faces off against one player. The “Brain" announces the piece to be moved: King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, or Pawn) but cannot say where the piece should move, (cannot specify the target square). The “Hand” must make a legal move with the chosen piece. The “Hand" moves the piece, possibly to the square the “Brain" had in mind, requiring trust and intuition.
The primary challenge is the strictly limited communication between partners:
Move Selection: For each turn, the Brain says a piece category (e.g., "Pawn," "Knight," "Queen"). The Hand must then make a legal move with any piece of that type.
Communication Ban: No other verbal or non-verbal hints are allowed. If the Brain says "Bishop" and the Hand moves a different piece or asks for clarification, penalties or forfeits may apply
Time Management: Both players are on the same clock. Making moves usually takes longer than standard chess due to the two-step verbal process.
Strategy: Usually, the Brain player dictate the strategic direction, while the Hand needs to be flexible enough to interpret the Brain's intent.
In our format, players can change teammates during the contest. The winners each get a point while the non-winner does not.
For each game, a “Hand-Brain" team member must rotate between being the “Brain” and the "Hand."
