Horde: Tips

When playing horde, the pawns are much more difficult to play so the black pieces are preferred.

Black strategy: Bishops and knights are expendable and should aways be traded for a couple pawns. The only viable strategy is to sack almost all your minor pieces and pawns for white pawns. Then get your queen behind enemy ranks. This sounds hard, but is easy. Lastly, remember that pawns can't move back and eventually will have to push forward. Use this to your advantage because pawns are weaker when they have to push forward and leave the safety of the main horde.

White Strategy: White is a lot harder to play. You have a lot of options and deciding is tough (especially for nubs like me). Try to keep your pawns together and not split them into individual pawn chains. Pawns are strong as a group so keep them in one. The hard thing about pawns is that black can stall out moves and force you into uncomfortable positions via zugswang if you aren't careful. As mentioned, Blacks goal is to trade off their minor pieces for opening up your ranks. NEVER let this happen. Instead try to have at least each file strong as a single gap in your horde can lead to your demise. Lastly, move your horde as a group so no pawn gets stranded by itself.
