How to Create A Storyline For Your KOTL

Hello, all of you fools and absolute buffoons. Today I'm to going to do my best to teach you how to create a half-decent storyline for your KOTL, something I've failed at doing for nine seasons now. happy.png

I'll give you a step-by-step guide, and hopefully, anyone who is trying to make a storyline/improve their storyline can benefit from this.

Step One: Deciding on a Theme

One of the most important parts of your storyline is the theme of it all. There are many different things that you could base it around, a video game, historical event/figure, some random thing you thought of in the shower, or even a book/movie setting. I'll quickly give a few examples of this, with the most prominent one being HTP's storyline, which resolved around Joseph Stalin, the leader of the USSR during WWII. Other examples will include MKOTL, which is based around warfare, The Bad KOTL and MOAR 2, which both have some characters based around different video games, and of course Kotl: The Original, which has a bunch of crazy characters mashed together into one great storyline.

Step Two: Coming up with Characters

The characters in your KOTL are arguably the most important aspect of the storyline, because if they are good characters that people enjoy, those players will keep coming back for more. When I come up with characters, I try to mix together some original character ideas with some characters already created in a game I recently played. Other KOTLs, like Kotl: The Original, use a bunch of seemingly random ideas and create a masterpiece of a storyline (except for the gambling. sigh.). KOTL: The Flipside uses characters that have previously appeared in other KOTLs, historical figures, and even aspects of his own personality as characters, like the Mad Hatter. Choosing characters that fit with your KOTL and you as the mod can be hard, but it will be rewarding if you can pull it off.

Step Three: Creating a Plot

Now we arrive at the final step, but also the hardest one. It is essential for a storyline to have, well, a story for it to work. It doesn't have to be a lot and you don't have to put storyline or lore in some games, but it's a good idea to put some in at least three games, I would say that four is the best. How I personally try to do it is I will load up the first and second game with story, introducing characters and maybe the overarching goal of the season, then games three and four will have light to no story, and games five and six will finish the season off with a bang, lots of story and the climax of the season. The plot doesn't have to be complicated, but it should leave the player wondering what might happen next, or maybe thinking about some secret that they discovered.

That's all that I have, maybe this is terrible advice, I don't really know. Hopefully, this will help some of you aspiring KOTL creators or anyone who wants to make a storyline for their already existent KOTL. Thanks for reading through this whole thing!

I will CRUSH all of you in Season 4 of Kotl: The Original. Especially you, Togepi. The Season 3 win will be your last (:
