Hurray! A new version of the app landed this week, and this one is a nice mix of Fixes and Features.

First, I'd like to apologize for the issues we had with crashing (particularly when using the Vs Computer feature or using the engine for analysis) after our last big update. We're confident that this new version has ironed out most if not all of the issues that followed from replacing Stockfish with Komodo. Our bad. This update shines a much nicer light on all the good things that come from switching to Komodo! Of course, that wasn't the only bug we fixed, but it was the biggest, for sure. Okay... What else...

Heroes! Who are YOUR chess heroes? Do you follow any of the more renowned grandmasters (and other celebrity players) who play here at Chess.com? Well, if you do, and you like observing high-level chess games, then you'll want to turn your notifications on! When a high-profile chess celebrity (whom you follow) starts playing Live Chess, we'll ping you so you can come watch! (And don't worry - we promise not to be obnoxious about it.) Not sure who to follow? No problem! Here's a list of players whose games are sure to instruct and entertain:

  • @Hikaru
  • @MagnusCarlsen
  • @LyonBeast
  • @gmjlh
  • @EricHansen
  • @DanielRensch
  • @FabianoCaruana
  • @GMWSO
  • @KNVB
  • @JohnUrschel
  • @AlexandraBotez
  • @Anna_Rudolf

Ok, this is kind of a biggie: We've made a lot of Live Chess improvements to reduce disconnects and clock issues and generally improve the stability of the platform. If you weren't having issues to begin with, then things should continue the same - but if you were one of the folks who saw stuff like this, we hope this new version helps a lot!

With fewer connection issues, the only thing left to spoil your chess experience might just be your opponents! But fear not: you can now report poor sports / abusive behavior, simply by tapping on their profile pic and selecting "Report" from the menu. It's an important feature for the community at large, but one we hope you won't have to use often!

Last but not least, here's something fun that we've had on the site for a while now, but I like it even better via the app!... Solo Chess is a fantastic way to work on your calculation and visualization skills when you've got just a few minutes to kill.

The rules are simple: Capture with every move until only one piece remains. If there's a King on the board, it MUST be the last piece standing. Finally, no piece may capture more than twice; a piece that does so will turn Black to indicate it can no longer be moved.

The feature includes three modes: Regular practice vs the difficulty level of your choice; Challenge mode, where you try for a perfect run vs puzzles that get progressively harder; and finally, Crazy Mode, which is... a bit nuts, frankly.

Solo Chess!

That's it for now! We hope you love the new version, and if so, please consider giving us a boost with a fresh rating/review in the App Store. And let us know what you think in the Comments! Thank you!
