Get ready for an explosive event - literally. The Chess.com Atomic Chess Championship happens on March 27-28, and anyone can join the action! With a $2,500 prize fund up for grabs, now’s your chance to blow up the competition!

What is atomic chess?

In this variant, every capture triggers an explosion that destroys anything in all adjacent squares - except for pawns, which, like cockroaches, are surprisingly sturdy against atomic radiation.

Can't imagine what it looks like? Here's a video of the internet's chess teacher - Here's a video of IM Levy Rozman playing it!

How to participate?

Qualifiers

The first qualifier happens on March 27 at 9 a.m. ET / 14:00 CET / 6:30 p.m. IST, with seven others following. The eight qualifier arenas each have a 3+0 time control and 75 minutes of duration.

The qualifiers run throughout the whole day, so there’s a time slot for everyone! Registrations for each qualifier will open one hour before the arena starts. Check out the full qualifiers schedule here (We'll publish the links to join each arena there soon)!

During the qualifiers, we may require participants to join a video call for fair-play checks to ensure everyone's safety (especially since we're dealing with Atomic Chess). Players who join the fair-play call must set up two cameras from different angles in their room. Non-compliance will result in a player's removal from the event. Quarantining after the event is not required.

Finals

The eight qualifier winners compete in a double-elimination knockout tournament for the title of Chess.com Atomic Chess Champion. The Final will happen on March 28 broadcast live on our Community Twitch channel, so tune in if you don't want to miss the fun!
