March Madness Tournament Results

Thank you to everyone who came out to our first tournament and supported the club! With the proceeds from the tournament, we will be able to purchase a couple new chess bags (finally can throw away those disgusting plastic bags), notation books for all the current club members, and a four-player chess set. Originally, we had planned to get pairing software, but we have a while to go before we get up to over 20 people per tournament. However, we had a decent turnout with 6 entrants. Lots of fun for everyone, and pretty balanced skill-wise. We will be expecting 4 to 6 more players for our April tournament.

Classical Results:

1. Connor - 4.5 pts

2. Trent - 4 pts

3. TIE - Steve and Jon - 2.5 points

5. Taylor - 1.5 pts

6. Tabitha - 0 pts.

Connor won 40$ for first place, and Trent won $30 for 2nd place. Steve and Jon split the 3rd place prize of 15$. Tabitha was our Top Female Finisher and went home with 25$. Congratulations Tabitha!

Blitz Results:

1. TIE - Connor and Ryan - 4 pts

3. Steve - 3 pts

4. Taylor - 1 pts

Connor and Ryan split the first place prize and went home with 15$ each. Steve won $10 as the third place finisher.

Steve, Jon, and Connor were kind enough to donate most if not all of their winnings to the club. Thank you very much for your support!

Here are a couple interesting games from the tournament, courtesy of Connor. Please send us your games so we can share them with the club!

Steve (1500) VS Connor (1350)

In this game Connor won after playing 25....g5 26. hxg5....Bf3+ 27. Kh2....hxg5 28. Nxg5....Ng4+..... but Steve had a way to save himself instead instead of getting trapped. Can you find the engine recommendations for white's next four moves starting on move 27 (the current position)? See if you can trade off queens and free yourself from the trapped position Steve ultimately lost in.

26.....Bf3+ White to Move

Connor (1350) VS Taylor (1000)

A very solid game. Here Connor misplayed a winning endgame position and Taylor was able to hold out for a draw. Can anyone avoid the draw and win as white after the queens are traded off after:

30.... Rxf5? White to Move.
