Hey Vancouverites. Come help to celebrate an important part of BC chess history this Sunday, May 28. As you may already know, in 1971 the historic world championship candidates' match between American sensation Bobby Fischer and Soviet GM Mark Taimanov was held at the Norm Theatre at the UBC campus here in Vancouver. Fischer famously won the match 6-0 and Taimanov faced professional repercussions at home in the Soviet Union as a result. Sadly, GM Taimanov is no longer with us, having passed away this past November 28. Read more about his legacy and view his games here.

The format will be a schvenigan-style match on six boards, between two teams representing Fischer and Taimanov. Players will use the first few opening moves chosen by Fischer and Taimanov in the actual match (Open Sicilian, King's Indian or Gruenfeld Defense). Anyone is welcome to spectate. If you would like to play, please contact @konstantin71 (pyryaev@gmail.com).

Where: UBC Campus - Henry Angus Building (Sauder) room 435 (2053 Main Mall)

When: Sunday, 28 May @ 12pm
