Hi everyone, the CGA Team is looking for new helpers!

As Custom Games Admins, our mission is to keep Variants a fair, comfortable and enjoyable place for all players in terms of its content (namely, variants). Almost all variants in the list you can find in different categories are made by our community members.

As most of you know being in this club, CGAs organize a thorough testing of custom variants you submit and then decide whether to accept them or decline. But Variants are growing rapidly and we get more and more players coming and exploring the world of custom chess variants, creating their own positions with crazy sets of game rules. As an NCV (New Custom Variant) Tester, you'll have a chance to work closely with the CGA Team to test new variants created by the community. Your feedback and insights will be invaluable in determining whether these variants are worthy of being added to the official list and played rated.

Although we have had many innovations in the past two years, some things have remained the same. I am copying the details from the previous post made by grable with some modifications:

  1. We're looking for NCV Testers, not CGAs.
    1. NCV Testers are add-ons to the CGA team. You'll participate in testing new variants, and forums moderation, but tournament management, listed custom variant decisions, and other CGA abilities are left to the actual CGAs.
    2. There's never an expectation that NCV Testers will ever become full-fledged CGAs.
  2. There is a time-commitment. If you're only able to be on Variants or the forums for an hour per week, this won't work. We're looking for players who are online at least 3 days per week on average, and would be able to work with the team to find times for testing (at least a few hours per week).
  3. There are requirements and procedures to follow. If you're the type of person who has a difficult time following directions, or playing by the rules, this isn't the position for you. Our team values personal responsibility, trust, and thoughtful communication.
    1. You'll be asked to complete tasks in a predetermined manner, and you'll be trusted to do that process thoughtfully, carefully, and diligently so as not to make mistakes. If most of your NCV or WoF threads were responded to with "Requirements not Met," that may be an indication that you need to step up your game when it comes to following simple instructions.
    2. You'll be expected to share your opinion and insights when testing variants. Of course we don't want you to just agree with everything we say, which also means you'll need to be able to express your thoughts effectively.
  4. We aren't setting any requirements in terms of age, punishment history on Variants, NCV/WoF acceptance rate, rating, etc., although you'll be more likely to be selected if you have shown yourself to be mature, skilled in variant play, and creative when it comes to position creation.
  5. We also aren't setting an exact number of how many NCV Testers we are going to select. We'll judge the applicants independently, and with any luck, find at least one of you rapscallions to be qualified!

We created a small quiz with some interesting questions to know you better and check how much you actually know about Variants. We don't expect 100% correct answers from you, but please take it seriously and responsibly.

We're opening up the applications today, Tuesday 12 September, and giving you all 4 weeks to prepare and submit your applications. The last day to submit the form will be 9 October. With any questions about the application process or the form itself, contact any member of the CGA Team. Good Luck!
