Dear Silverdale Chess Club Friends and Families,
There are special prizes in store this week and a truly exceptional, live Grandmaster Lecture next week (by the coach of the U.S. Women’s Chess Team!) at your Silverdale Chess Club.
This Week — Fun and Prizes!
Get ready to use your tactical chess skills this week for fun and prizes! While regular chess play will resume this week we will also be awarding prizes to anyone who solves two or more of the 2-move checkmate puzzles we will be posting on the chess demo board. (Can you solve the one above?)
Prizes include recently donated collector's item chess books and magazines. Two collector's edition chess sets will be awarded to those who solve the most puzzles correctly!
Next Week — A Grandmaster Lecture!
There is more exciting news to share about next week's club meeting (on April 5th), On that day at 3pm, the Silverdale Chess Club will host a live online lecture by one of the world's top players and the coach of the U.S. Women’s Chess Team.
International Grandmaster Melik Khachiyan will be our guest via video on the large video display.
Melik is one of the best chess teachers in the world. Among his own early coaches was former World Champion, GM Tigran Petrosian, and among his former students was GM Levon Aronian, who said "...it was Khachiyan who took me as a third-category player and made me an IM.”
GM Khachiyan was appointed by the US Chess Federation to coach the US Youth Chess Team in the 2023 World Youth Chess Championships held during 12th~25th November 2023, in Montesilvana, Italy. Under GM Khachiyan's guidance, FM & WGM Rochelle Wu won silver medal in the Girls Under 18 section.
Grandmaster Melik's many credentials:
- Professional Coach since 1990;
- Worked for Armenian Chess Federation since 1900 through departure in 2001;
- Trained L.Aronian, 1990~1997. On 1995 I got the title on Honored Coach of Armenia for L.Aronian's successes;
- Raised many talented kids in Armenia, who eventually became known on chess world. Among them, GM A.Pashikian, GM T.Petrosian, GM T.Gharamian. All of them had reach NM level under my trainings;
- Helped as well to WGM E.Danielian and WIM N.Aghinian for some period of time;
- From 2001 to current I have been coaching in US;
- Most honorable students are: GM S.Zierk (World Champion U18 in 2010), GM K.Troff (helped for 2 years to reach strong 2300 level, winning Silver and Gold in World Youth Championships, IM C.Hilby, WIM S.Liao;
- Current students: IM A.Wang and WIM A.Eswaran;
- Teaching on chess.com since 2009;
- Head Coach of US Women Olympic Team since 2010, and Team Captain since 2017.
