On today's irregular issue of Tactics of the Week we're going to be looking into Pawn Promotion exercises, as well as a special tactics corner that takes tactics straight from the games being played right here in the ARC! I know that this is what everybody wants to see; if they got their name in a game, so there's no point in making you do the pawn tactics first, so here it is!

Actual ARC Games Corner

Woodpecker Corner: Today's Theme (Pawn Promotion)

When a pawn promotes to a queen, the pawn vanishes and a queen, worth nine points, appears in it's place; thus the net gain of 8 points is made. This is a large material gain and is therefore worth a considerable sacrifice to achieve a pawn promotion.

Up above you'll find a very typical pawn promotion tactic. Black has an advanced pawn but White is currently blocking it with his queen. Of course Black is more than willing to give up his queen for a rook in order to ensure promotion (see what happens in the game above). Now, here are 10 pawn promotion exercises to practice the woodpecker method with. happy.png

I hope you enjoyed this edition of Tactics of the Week as much as I did making it!! grin.png I really wish I could of added a lot of more exercises to the Actual ARC Games Corner, but sadly, it took me over an hour just to get the 3 examples I have (finding them, computer checking them, etc.)! So I'm making Tactics of the Week a caller's-in-run-the-show type of deal. Just message me with a link to a game you played that includes a tactic you're proud of, then I'll add it to the next Tactics of the Week (or month...) edition! It doesn't even have to be played in the ARC, just as long as you (an ARC member) played it! happy.png I look forward to Tactics of the Week #8! Please comment below if you have any suggestions, comments or reviews (just something to show me you read this wink.png). Good luck with your current club match games! A very delayed award ceremony will be held shortly for the results of June. frustrated.png
