Home School In the afternoon Open tournament, fifth-grade prodigy Kevin Ching finished in clear second place at 5 points. Aurelia White earned the title of 2022 Hawaii Women State Quick Chess Champion. Scholastic players earned category-level titles as Quick Chess Champions: C - Kyle Ching, D - Kevin Ching, u1000 - Koa Satterfield, and u600 - Troy Kinamura-Foki. Collectively the younger generation captured almost 500 quick-chess rating points from the older, experienced players.
Several teams of young players competed in the evening Bughouse Championships, but none of them made the podium. The winners - who are now the first official Hawaii State Bughouse Champions ever - are former Hawaii K-12 chess superstars Likeke Aipa and Tristan Kaonohi. They finished with 9 wins and only one loss. They split their match 1-1 with Gabriel and Caleb White, who finished in second place with 8 wins. Third place went to the master/expert team of Paul Iinuma and Damian Nash with 7 wins. Here are the full results.
Chess is a lot of fun, and this fast-paced chess festival was especially fun because of the record turn-out: 62 players in the Scholastic, 48 in the Open, and 20 in the Bughouse. Mahalo to everyone who decided to play and made it a great success.
This event will certainly happen again in 2023.
The next HCF chess event is a New Year's Quick-Chess event at 3pm on January 1st. It is online at the Hawaii Chess Federation club at chess.com.
Happy holidays to our chess friends and family,
Damian Nash and Ed Seid, Tournament Organizers and Directors
