The French Defense is one of the fundamental openings and a common defensive strategy against white's first move 1.e4. In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy continues the series on the French Defense with the Exchange Variation. If you didn't watched the first two videos of the French Defense, you can watch them here:

French Defense - Introduction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgT-V.

French Defense - Advance Variation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ5-G.

The French Defense is characterized by the following moves: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 If white captures on d5 by playing 3.exd5, we enter the Exchange Variation. After the exchange of the e5 pawns, we have a symmetrical position on the board, where white reached a simplified position. Afterwards, black is aiming to develop his pieces to start an attack. A special variation that arises out of the Exchange Variation is the so-called Monte Carlo Variation that will also be covered in this video. The results of games where the Exchanged Variation was played show that black wins more often than white.

The main focus of this video is on the basic ideas, strategies and plans for both sides in the different lines.
