In this video, IM Alex Astaneh is sharing with you some of the main lines of the Yugoslav Attack in the Sicilian Dragon, which is not just the mainline for white against the Sicilian Dragon, but it is the toughest challenge for Sicilian Dragon players to face.
The Yugoslav Attack is characterized by the following moves:
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 0-0 8.Qd2 Nc6
From here, White has two major continuations: He can either play 9.Bc4 which is the variation we will mainly focus in this video, or he plays 9.0-0-0
3:42 – Variation with 9.0-0-0
7:10 – Variation with 9.Bc4
Hope you enjoy this instructive game featuring the Yugoslav Attack to showcase the general motifs and strategies that can arise out of this opening. What’s important to take away is that really for the white side against the Sicilian Dragon you want to attack and you want to be willing to sacrifice a couple of pawns if it’s necessary in order to crush through against the black King. White has to be confident of giving up that material so that his attack comes through faster than black’s play on the queenside.
