Dear Silverdale Chess Club Friends and Families — aka "Chess Silverados,"

Thanks to everyone who made our “Opening Day” at the new Moment Brewing location a big success. It was exciting to make the transition from the Silverdale Library and have more time and more refreshments available. (The custom-crated beer is superb as are the hot dogs and melts, and the Donut Shop next door is' open until 4:00pm on Saturdays).

Two-Move Checkmate Contest

This week we’re adding a Two-Move Checkmate Contest to the festivities. We’ll have a demo board set up and be changing the positions on the board every 5-10 minutes to show a two-move solution, either a checkmate or a decisive win of material. There will be up to ten positions in all and contestants will write down the winning move(s) on a handout card (bring a pen!). The greatest number of correct answers will receive a chess keychain, magnet or other prize, courtesy of  chess.com.
The contest will be happening during regular chess game play so you can do both at the same time if you wish (like your own personal Simul).

Silverdale Chess Club Library

We are pleased to announce the donation of a library of chess books from Ms. Kathy Kuyper on behalf of the estate of the late Daniel E. Marshall ("Dan”), a fixture and a former chess champion of the Seattle Chess scene. The chess books will be available for Club members to borrow for free.

We are currently seeking a small bookshelf to display the books at club meetups. If you have a small bookshelf to donate, or know of one, please let me know.

Scholastic Chess Tournament on Bainbridge

Club member Allen Brown is organizing and  directing a scholastic chess tournament in a few short weeks. The West Sound Scholastic Chess Open will be held at  Bainbridge High School, on February 15th 2025 with sections for all age groups and all skill levels and is open to all students (K-12) with an entry fee of just $5.
Medals will be awarded to top players in each section, as well as any unrated player attending their first rated tournament. The tournament entry is $5.00 which covers the registration costs. Attendees also will need to be members of US Chess Federation with a USCF ID. For under 18, this costs ~$20 per year.
For more information and registration please see https://chessreg.com/westsound .

Future Plans:  We are working on upcoming “virtual” Simuls with chess notables and GMs along with a Chess Trivia contest as well as bringing back Chess Quads and a Club Tournament.

Stay tuned!

See you Saturday!

Larry S.
