Hi.

None of the Scandinavian teams are running vote chess games especially succesfully. Why?

First some stats:
Team Sweden #66 on VC leaderboard - 39% in winning ratio
Team Scandinava #116 - 39%
Team Norway #569 44%
Team Finland #748 - 100% (only three games finished)
Team Iceland #1,797 - 11%
Team Denmark #2,171 - 0% (no games played)

I've managed 1,000s of vote chess games on Chess.com for many teams.
Some of the most succesfully teams are:
Chess Society #2 - 46%
Team Europe #21 - 65%
Bobby Fischer's group #75 - 86%
Kasparov Chess Club #80 - 51%
Chess960 Players Group #112 - 61%

Which are the main differences between the succesful teams and the Scandinavian teams?

Here some observations:
1. There're more players attending in the better teams games
2. There're more higher rated players attending in the better teams gamas
3. There're more players that contributing with analysis and comments in the better teams
4. There're fewer players that complaints about various stuff in the better teams

If looking at the Scandinavian teams I've observed following:
1. More players expects that other guys in the team should do the work
2. More players complaints regarding the games and that nobody talks
3. Fewer player contributing with advices and comments
4. Danish players complaints mostly, but also the Norwegian players do that. Mainly about that there's too little talking. Getting upset and frustrated about this. It doesn't contributes to make a happy athmosphere.
5. Swedish players more often wants to making decisions in consensus, which not work in vote chess. Get upset and frustrated when this is not possible.
6. Many higher rated Scandinavian players seem prefer playing by sole, and not together with others. Get frustrated when lower rated players voting on bad moves or not follow their advices. Skip attending to new games.
7. Some players get frustrated if the team not win at least 100% of the games. Don't want to play if they don't win.
8. Some players get upset and frustrated if players voting early and not waiting.

Vote chess is challenging, especielly for midsized teams. Seem easier get it work smoothly either in the largest teams or in smaller ones.

My experience is that well-working vote chess teams:
- rather look at the games as curling rather than some kind of negotation.
- the early voters make their choise as best as they can, and hopefully detect some options that are reasonable.
- the mid voters contribute with some advices and comments, and filter which are the most reasonable vs less good move options.
- the late voters make the final decision and detect the best move to do.

If thinking like this, there're no need for any:
- frustration if not all attendes talking
- frustration if some players submit their votes more or less early or late
- frustration if some lower rated players voting on bad options at an early stage
- frustration if we cannot make decisions in consensus

Basically in vote chess is to forgett any expectations of making common decisions in consensus. The conversions are not mentioned to make decisions. They are mainly to give those that not yet have submitted their votes some good advices so they can make a better decision when time to voting. It's too much focus now on trying to negotiate and agree, rather than contributing with analysis to those that not yet have submitted their votes.

And finally; expecting others to talk and communicate, not create any positive athmosphere. When people feel forced to talk, they rather stand by and not attend to the games.

So, think about this games like curling...where the early voters trying to detect some reasonable options, the mid voters contibute with some analysis and comments, and the late voters finalize it all.

You can get more experienced in vote chess by participating in some of the larger and more succesfully vote chess teams. But not forgett, there are more or less talking also in these. The talking is not what makes the teams winning. There're good examples of succesful vote chess teams where they not talk so much, and others that does.

So, I believe the basics rather is to play these games like curling.
Think about it...

Please feel free add your throughts and comments how we could improving in vote chess.
