Hi! Today I am going to tell you about a opening called the Philidor Defense. The ECO of the opening is C41. This is one of my least favorite openings when my opponent plays it, but I quite like to play it when I am Black. The reason to play the Philidor Defense is to protect the pawn on e5 from losing it by the knight.This is what the position would look like:

 

 

 

 

 

 

There are many tricks to the Philidor Defense. Moving the pawn to d6 exposes the bishop so it can move to g4 and pin the knight to the queen. Then you can move the knight to c6 and then to d4 to harrass the knight on f3. Then knight cannot capture since the queen would then be lost.
