There are many sequences of moves that win material in chess. These are called tactics. The first tactic I will speak of is forks. Forks are moves that attack two undefended pieces at the same time, usually winning one. Here is an example of a fork:

In this example, black checked white and threatened to take the queen at the same time. White was forced to trade queen for bishop, losing the game.

Try to find this game-winning fork:

While you might think of taking the free pawn with your bishop, it is better to push your d pawn and fork the knight and rook. This shows how even the lowliest piece can do a tactic.
