Many have their Mr Myagi-type guru that has helped guide them on the chess road to improvement. Mine was family friend Stephen Clegg, who spent many hours ruthlessly trouncing me, a youngster of the 80s, patiently teaching terms & tactics. Back then I was amazed by his memory. On a real board (no PCs etc) he could finish a game, reset the board & recap move-by-move from memory to coach with insightful analysis. Having lost touch for 25+ yrs, I tracked him down 2013, persuading him to join here for a game. Despite years away, Mr C turned out to be as silky as I'd ever remembered. After 11 straight defeats (without a sniff!) I finally won one, not before Mr C had shot from 1200 to 1999. This is one of my proudest wins to date, an important milestone perhaps. The bottom line is that this goodfellow is very hard to beat, hence this invitation-only group. It’s only for chess.com members that manage to honestly/fairly conquer The Clegg! :)
