Gary Chapman observed that people show (and understand) affection and love in five different ways. This ways he calls "love languages". He identifies five of them:

- words of affirmation: Showing love through verbal appreciation, compliments, and encouragement.

- quality time: Showing love by giving undivided attention, engaging in meaningful conversations, and participating in various activities together.

- gifts: Showing love through thoughtful and meaningful gifts that symbolize appreciation and affection.

- acts of service: Showing love by performing various tasks that are helpful and ease the partner’s burdens.

- physical tough: Showing love through physical gestures such as hugging, kissing, and holding hands among others.

To show another person affection in a way she understands this affection it is important to express the affection in a love language the other person understands. Most people express their affection in the love languages they would like to receive signs of affection themselfs. To learn the love languages of the other person should be a purpose to cultivate the relationship.
