From 1867 to 1883, Simon Winawer (1838-1920) was one of the best chess players in the world. Thanks to Nimzovitch, Botvinnik and others, we credit him by naming a particular line in the French Defense the Winawer Variation: 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 Bb4.

Tarrasch, in Three Hundred Chess Games, notes that the Dresden tournament of 1892 is the first Winawer had entered since his first place finish in Nuremberg, 1883. The following game is one of 14 from the 1892 Dresden tournament that Tarrasch thought highly of and chose to annotate for his book Three Hundred Chess Games.
