Today was the big day. The battle that might determine the fait of Hinodehana, and maybe the whole Union.

Hinodehana was a city-state, interlinked with the other towns of the Wa-no-Kuni Union. Although sometimes, like right now, they came together to face a dangerous enemy, they usually preferred to work alone, which is why some Union members didn’t show up. Jokes on them, Midnight thought. No matter what they do, they’ll still join the war, sooner or later. Whether they want it or not, they always find you.

Midnight was from Inazuma, another city state and one of the most loyal to the Union. Their Kunishu, a powerful Lightning User, answered the Hinodehana’s call for help and brought 15 Kumi of regular warriors and a Kumi of Lightning mages, led by the Kumi-gashira. Midnight was one of the 30 mages in the Kumi. The samurai were dressed in their classical armor, made out of small, leather and iron scales that were laced together with silk, while the mages wore loose skirts and robes, the color of snow. Together, they formed a formidable force, capable of taking down a small army.

But what they were facing today wasn’t a small army, and they knew it. No matter how skilled they were, the foxshifters and their army was unbeatable. Thousands upon thousands of mages, with sorcery capable of making a man turn against his fellow warriors. There were rumors of elves shooting their own friends, and of dwarves going insane. Fighting them was like fighting nature itself; an uncontrollable force, making your judgment cloud over and your mind slowly go insane.
