Back in April we missed a memorial match for Helen McCrory and would like to put that right, as she was becoming recognised as a real star with a massive future potential and died so young. Born in Paddington, London, with an ancestry from her father in Glasgow and her mother in Cardiff, her father being a diplomat she grew up with international stays in Norway, Nigeria, Cameroon, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Madagascar & Paris, but was educated at Queenswood School, nr Hatfield, Herts, then studied acting at the Drama Centre, King’s Cross. Went on to a strong developing career, both onstage with the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company and onscreen, but on screen winning a BAFTA Wales for Streetlife 1995 and also played amongst many others Anna Karenina on TV 2000, Mrs Vandeleur in Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking 2004, Casanova’s mother in Casanova 2005, Rosanna in Doctor Who 2010, Cherie Blair in The Special Relationship 2010, Mama Jeanne in Hugo 2011, Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter series; for our own interest she was Clair Dowar MP in Skyfall 2012; also Madame Kali in Penny Dreadful 2014-5, Queen Elizabeth I in Bill 2015, Stelamria in His Dark Materials 2019-20 and perhaps her most celebrated role was as Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders 2014-20, which brought heightened interest in the history of Birmingham. She lived in Tufnell Park, North London with her husband Damian Lewis and two children, and they also had another home near Sudbury, Suffolk. During the pandemic in 2020 she & Damian supported and led the profile of the charity FeedNHS and raised over £1 million, but she died of breast cancer at home the following year.
