Hi, in this topic I'm going to show you some patterns that will win you material or even the whole game with checkmate. This is for absolute beginners and hopefully, most sub-1000s will find some new weapons to help improve their games with that being said let's jump in.

1. Lateral Checkmate

I put this checkmate first because it is the most basic and easy to understand. You need either queens or rooks for this checkmate and it doesn't matter which ones you have.

If you have a queen you want to get it behind the rook, this way you can never blunder any pieces.

2. King and Queen Checkmate

This is another basic one but I thought I should still include it just in case. To checkmate the enemy king you need to get him on the side of the board.

As you can see the queen checkmate is very simple you just get the king to the edge of the board and then get the queen in his face protected by the king. For this checkmate, you have to always be careful of stalemates and double-check if the king can move before you move.

3. Queen Sack into Backrank Checkmate

This is the last simple pattern on here I promise. I'm sure almost everyone knows the backrank mate but if you don't it looks something like this

The Variation I'm about to show may look like a blunder to some people but it results in a checkmate on the next move. This is also a famous checkmating pattern often used in low rated puzzles.

4. Rook Endgame

This is a simple way to ensure that a pawn gets promoted

5. Rook and King Checkmate

A lot of people struggle with this one but it is similar to the king checkmate in that you need to get them to the side of the board.

6. Queen Check into Rook Capture

This is a very popular puzzle solution, opportunity for this trap springs up often in lower ELO chess games.

As you can see it is extremely effective either winning you material or the game.

7. Smothered Checkmate

This is a hard one to spot and also doesn't occur that often but when it does it makes the victory all the sweeter.

8. Queen Smothered Mate

This is known sometimes as the dove's tail mate because it's supposed to look like one but I'm just gonna call it the Queen Smothered Mate

9. Illuminati Checkmate

So I found this out today and it's what inspired me to make this post and it allows you to checkmate in the middle of the board with a rook, bishop and Knight.

This checkmate would work with any piece

10. Sacking a Less Valuable piece to capture a more valuable one.

For the last pattern, I thought I would show you a simple trick normally used to trade rooks for queens.
