Team Scotland

Team Scotland is the official national team representing Scotland in Chess.com daily leagues.

Before applying to join Team Scotland, please read what follows. It is important that you understand the type of club we are, ensure that you meet the listed criteria and apply in the correct manner.

We are a competitive league team, not a social club. We compete in daily chess leagues, with up to three days per move. We do not play live chess or offer coaching.

Our two main leagues are the World League (WL) and the European League (EL). Most of our matches are open rating, although some are for lower-rated daily players (U1400, U1200 or U1000).

If you have already played during this season for another national team in WL or EL, you may not compete for Team Scotland in that same league until next season.

To be admitted onto Team Scotland, you must:

  • be at least 13 years of age (as required by Chess.com's User Agreement)
  • be Scottish, living in Scotland, from Scotland but abroad, or have another valid connection with Scotland
  • have been a member of Chess.com for at least six months
  • have no history of abusive behaviour.

Please note that WL and EL also require that you have played a minimum of ten daily rated games before joining any of their league matches.

If you believe that you meet these criteria, you are welcome to apply to join. You must include a message with your application stating clearly that you are at least 13 years of age and explaining the nature of your connection with Scotland.

We consider any avoidable losses by timeout to be an abuse of the trust that we place in our players, so if you have lost any daily chess games on Chess.com due to timeout, you must also include an explanation of the circumstances and a statement confirming that you will do your utmost to avoid any repeat instances.

Your application message must also include a statement that you understand and intend to follow Chess.com's Fair Play Policy.

Any application not including the required statements will be rejected.

Once you apply, if a review of your account indicates eligibility to join, a member of our Administration Team will message you to finalise your admission onto the team. Please ensure that your privacy settings allow you to receive that message.

We look forward to welcoming you onto Team Scotland.
